Patients Coming Off Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People purchasing such treatments should be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting typically have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Experts believe the way of the jabs explains the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It was like something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," described one woman.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
