The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
